... aunque ya son 21 los que tenemos, creo que este fragmento de "Iluminaciones" de Rimbaud podemos estirarlo hasta la primera mitad de la década de los 20. El 2011 ha sido un año de relaciones, mucha música, decadencia, y nostalgia de los años 80, los 60, y del siglo XVIII… ritmos electrónicos, letras llenas de dobles sentidos y "silly love songs" que se quedan grabadas a fuego en nuestro corazón, y es que esa cosa llamada amor es parte de nuestra naturaleza. Como bien dijo un ficticio poeta inglés: "love isn't brains, children, it's blood."

Por todo eso y mucho más, la nueva colaboradora de este blog Esther, y yo, hemos decidido realizar un top no de las mejores canciones que se han publicado en 2011 (que hay unas cuantas), sino de las canciones que han significado algo especial para nosotras. Os dejamos con la banda sonora de nuestro año:

1. Love like a sunset Part I & II - Phoenix

Desde las primeras notas de Love like a sunset Part I, nos embarcamos en un viaje hacia el lugar que buscaba Johnny Marco en Somewhere, un lugar en el que mirar al horizonte con una sonrisa. Love like a sunset es una canción dividida en dos partes con la que hay cerrar los ojos y dejarse llevar por las emociones que transmite. No es de extrañar que Sofia Coppola dijese que decidió crear una nueva película a partir de esta canción (es lo que tiene ser la mujer del cantante de Phoenix). El resultado, Somewhere, es una nueva búsqueda por encontrarse a sí mismo, como la que nos narra magistralmente en Lost in Translation, y el reflejo de esas relaciones rotas de hijos y padres divorciados. Maravilloso comienzo y final con la canción, banda sonora con la que también empezó y acabó la July’s Nites de DJ:SUIT.

2. Amor Fati - Washed Out

Amor Fati ha sido la canción elegida por Esther de este álbum, que junto a Eyes Be Closed y You And I son tres de mis favoritas de Washed Out. Within And Without fue la banda sonora de mi mes de agosto. Me gusta tanto porque evoca en mí las mismas imágenes que A Storm in Heaven de The Verve, me despiertan a un mismo lugar: la costa de California, el Pacífico azul profundo ante mis ojos. Una habitación de sábanas blancas, como la cama que aparece en la portada del álbum, un cuadro de Klimt y una foto en blanco y negro, plantas junto a la ventana que tiñen la pared de verde. Os dejamos con una de nuestras partes favoritas de la letra:

3. Château - Housse de Racket

“C’est la vie de Château”, esa frase que repite el cantante de Housse de Racket, uno de mis nuevos grupos favoritos (son como los hermanos pequeños de mis queridos Phoenix), se quedó grabada en mi cabeza desde la primera vez que la escuché en el Kitsuné Maison Compilation 10. La vida de palacio de la que habla parece no ser otra que la de Marie Antoinette en Versalles con frases como: “everybody wants to get our heads", o "once I was a queen"; al igual que el "my husband isn’t here" que me hace pensar irremediablemente en la relación entre Kirsten Dunst y Jamie Dornan (el conde Axel Fersen) en la película de Sofia Coppola, una de mis favoritas.

4. Under the milky way - Miami Horror

"I think about the loveless fascination, under the milky way tonight", frase que inmortalizaron The Church y que los grandes Miami Horror nos traen a nuestros días, haciendo que a más de un nostálgico se le parta el corazón al recordar este temazo de los 80, y al recordar a Donnie Darko. Elegida, por Esther y por mí, como una de nuestras canciones del año.

5. Wait And See - Holy Ghost!

Wait & See es una canción que desde su primer minuto te hace sentir como si estuvieras de vuelta en los 80. Me puedo imaginar a Clay y a Blair de Less Than Zero sentados en una cafetería mirándose desde detrás de sus Wayfarer sin ser capaces de aclarar sus sentimientos, y es que ese tipo de relación es la que describe la canción: "Are you feeling love too? Well you promise to be honest with me, I guess I'll have to wait and see". Holy Ghost! son otro de mis nuevos grupos favoritos, por esta canción, por su gran álbum debut, la portada del single inspirada en Joseph Szabo, y el fantástico videoclip de esta canción.

6. Champion Sound - Crystal Fighters

"I wanna find my girl, love will be amazing" eso repiten los Crystal Fighters en esta canción, escogida por Esther. La incluimos un nuestro top porque Star of Love ha sido uno de los discos que hemos tenido on repeat durante el 2011, lleno de sonidos cautivadores e hipnóticos, melodías llenas de color y de emoción, con canciones tan buenas como ésta. Además, DJ:SUIT nos hizo bailar con el remix de Psychemagik que aparece en su sesión de Happy New Year.

7. What the Water Gave Me - Florence + The Machine

Cada vez que escucho esta canción y su estribillo "lay me down, let the only sound be the overflow..." me viene a la mente la imagen de Ophelia tendida en el agua del lago, rodeada de flores, o la de aquellas piras funerarias depositadas en el océano que aparecían en las historias celtas, como la de Tristán e Isolda. También pienso en Lux, una Ophelia moderna marcada por su relación de sentimientos contrariados con Trip, abocada al suicidio, tendida sobre ese campo de hierba. La imagen de Kirsten Dunst, en otro de sus papeles magistrales, enfundada en su vestido de novia como Justine en Melancholia, también recorre mi cabeza, por eso he decidido acompañar la canción de esta imagen de The Virgin Suicides. Ceremonials, el álbum que contiene esta canción, ha sido uno de mis regalos de Navidad, y What the Water Gave Me forma parte de este top porque es una canción increíble, con la maravillosa voz de Florence Welch, que consigue evocar mundos de fantasía y traer a mi mente imágenes que permanecían adormecidas en algún rincón oscuro.

8. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster The People

Foster The People son otro de los nuevos grupos a los que no le queremos perder la pista. Esther ha elegido esta canción suya, con un ritmo muy pegadizo, con una historia que comienza hablándonos de un tipo con un cigarrillo de liar en los labios, y cuyo estribillo bien podría ser la sinopsis de un relato negro de instituto americano, según algunos críticos y la vox populi: kids running, cigarettes, and a six shooter gun.

9. Midnight City - M83

"Waiting in a car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
The night city grows

... desde las primeras notas de la Midnight City de M83 puedes sentirte en ese coche, en medio de la noche, observando las luces de la gran ciudad. Una palabra para describir esta canción, capaz de transportarte a cualquier lugar del mundo: épica. Escuchadla y dejaros llevar por su magia.

10. Cannons - Youth Lagoon

Cerramos nuestro top con una canción de Youth Lagoon, seleccionada por Esther - banda sonora de su verano -, de ésas que te enamoran desde los primeros segundos, por su atmósfera de ensueño y su nostalgia:

Melancholia by Lars Von Trier

Two of the best films I've watched this year. When you read the plot of both of them, you may think you're gonna watch the typical science fiction film. The really great thing from these films is not their original sci fi story, but the strong female leading characters and the awesome images that both of them have. Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg give us a wonderful performance in Melancholia, and Brit Marling gives you the chills in Another Earth in her scenes (she's one of the writers of the film too), and has an amazing chemistry with William Mapother, who has a little but heartbreaking role in the film.

If you like films with a great dramatic plot underneath a visually stunning surface, you can't miss these two films.

He empezado a colaborar con el blog musical "Me es Indieferente" con una sección llamada "Spinning Plates" (click para entrar) donde repasaremos la trayectoria y las últimas novedades de los grupos de música que combinan el indie con la electrónica, llamada indietrónica, con toques de pop/rock, french touch, dance-punk, chillwave, techno, nu disco y con sonidos que nos recuerdan a la New Wave.

I discovered Laura Makabresku looking through Lina Scheynius' favorites on flickr and I instantly felt in love with her work. She's a young and talented photographer from Poland, and her photographs are full of feelings. They're visually stunning, like they're out from a Lars Von Trier or Neil Jordan's film.

In those long summer days (and nights) the lyrics from Animal Collective come to my mind: "my bed is a pool and the wall's on fire". I have to study for my October exams, but I don't really feel like studying in this heat... I rather spend the morning in my swimming pool with the sunglasses on (like Ben Braddock after graduating).
I've been listening to a lot of new music lately, and I've also had time to watch a few new films with my boyfriend, and the one we've liked the most is Submarine (totally recommended). Besides from that, I've just discovered a pretty interesting new photographer Ildar Iksanov, I'm loving Discotheque Confusion more and more everyday, it's my fashion's daily read; and these are the songs I can't get out of my head these days:

Zabriskie Point (1970)

Weird film from Antonioni set in the late 1960s counterculture.The first half of the film has the vibe of a documentary about the strikes and riots in L.A for the civil rights and against the Vietnam war, and the second half feels more like a road trip with amazing images of Zabriskie Point on the Death Valley.
It was a commercial failure and critics labeled it as a boring and empty movie. I have to admit is not the best thing Antonioni has made, but it's interesting to watch it because of its photography (totally stunning), the soundtrack, and this scene, which is one of the most beautiful scenes ever filmed... like a surrealist painting in motion:

Monochromy is a thing of the past. DJ:SUIT's sessions are full of shades. Behind the decks he experiments with sensations that go straight to the hypothalamus. He rises our temperature with a chemical synthesis: White Lies' aggressive post-punk, Shit Robot, Hurts, Chemical Brothers, Cut Copy, Lykke Li or Miami Horror; an addictive touch of French Electro from Justice, Aeroplane, Teenage Bad Girl or The Toxic Avenger, and a little dose of Techno, Nu-Disco and the Spanish's House of Villa Gombao Inc.

If Warhol promised us 15 minutes of fame, DJ: SUIT give us 60 minutes of eargasmic experience with his sessions: uncontrollable emotions, feeling like following the rhythm with your whole body and wanting to wreck the dance floor.

Isabelle, from The Dreamers, is one of my favorite female characters ever. Eva Green is beyond perfect in that role.

I watched this film a year ago and I liked it, but I rewatched it a few days ago and I felt in love with it. Christophe Honoré, its director, has become one of my favorite directors thanks to this film, Les Chansons D'Amour, and La belle personne.

Dans Paris is a film about love, sorrow, lost, insecurity, depression, parenthood and brotherhood, all mixed up with a good dose of comedy and drama, which makes it truly realistic. The best thing from the film is Romain Duris' epic performance, and Louis Garrel's charming and funny role:

I love this scene. Ryan Gosling's acting moves me deep down. You can feel his grief and anxiety listening to his trembling voice and looking at his eyes. When he says "the kids... keep me focused", and we start to listen to Feist singing "Lover's spit" on the background, I can't help my tears. And that beautiful moment is followed by an amazing monologue to his class:

"Change moves in spirals, not circles. For example, the sun goes up and then it goes down. But everytime that happens, what do you get? You get a new day. You get a new one. When you breathe, you inhale and you exhale, but every single time that you do that you're a little bit different then the one before. We're always changing. And its important to know that there are some changes you can't control but that there are others you can."

Corinne Day

Corinne Day was one of my favorite photographers. She helped launch Kate Moss's career with her editorial for The Face in 1990. A few years later she shot her for the iconic Vogue editorial called "Under Exposure", my favorite editorial ever (I posted it here a few months ago).

Besides, Corinne was the still photographer from one of my most beloved films: The Virgin Suicides. She passed away last Sunday after a 14-year battle with brain cancer. If you don't know her work I recommend you to check it out 'cause Corinne's photography was wonderful and unique.

I see people going down

I'm feeling totally down, with a little headache. I've spent the morning in the
beach, it's being a sunny day but not too hot. I just want to lay in my bed or sit on the balcony and have a smoke and breath the fresh salty air... but I can't. I've gotta be on my desk to study International Law. It sucks. The only thing that makes me feel better right now it's a glass of Lipton ice tea, and listen to some music. It would be perfect if a guy like Gainsbourg played the piano for me, just like in the picture, but since that's not gonna happen, I'm content with listening to this song:

"Las hermanas Lisbon se estaban alejando de nosotros. Ya no podíamos evocar el timbre ni la cadencia exacta de sus voces. Se desvanecía el color de sus ojos, la situación de sus lunares y hoyuelos. Pero en lugar de relegarlas al olvido, contemplábamos las cosas que habíamos conseguido de ellas: el microscopio de Therese, un joyero con una hebra de los cabellos rubios de Mary, la fotocopia de la estampa de la Virgen de Cecilia, y una blusa de Lux.

Las chicas se habían reducido de cinco a cuatro, pero todas se estaban convirtiendo en sombras. Nos devanábamos los sesos para dar con la manera de ponernos en contacto con ellas. Las llamaríamos por teléfono. Sostuvimos el teléfono delante de los altavoces y pusimos la canción que de manera más directa transmitía los sentimientos que nos inspiraban las hermanas Lisbon.

El día siguiente, a la misma hora, sonó nuestro teléfono y oímos el golpe de una aguja al caer sobre el disco y la voz de Gilbert O'Sullivan que cantaba desde un disco rayado. La letra podría haber estado compuesta por fragmentos de un diario que las hermanas Lisbon musitaban en nuestros oídos. Aunque no eran sus voces las que oíamos, la canción conjuraba sus imágenes con más fuerza que nunca. Las sentíamos, al otro extremo del hilo, soplando el polvo de la aguja, sosteniendo el teléfono sobre el negro disco que iba girando. Ya teníamos preparada nuestra respuesta y, apenas la transmitimos, las chicas Lisbon volvieron a transmitir la suya, y de esta manera fue transcurriendo la noche:

Me encanta esta película por su sencillez, por la especial relación de profesor y alumna de

Nemours (Louis Garrel) y Junie (Léa Seydoux), y por el tono melancólico de la historia,

acompañado de canciones francesas de los 60 y la maravillosa música de Nick Drake.
